Doctor (qualifying in 1982), Doctor in Medicine and Nutrition (1992), specialising in preventive medicine and public health (1996).

Professor of preventive medicine and public health and director of the Clinical Sciences department of the Las Palmas University in the Canary Islands.

Director of the community Nutrition Research Centre of the Barcelona University Science Park.

President of the Foundation for the development of the Mediterranean diet (since 1996)

President of the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition (SENC) (since 2000)

Consultant for the WHO (1991 to 1995 and 1996 to 2001) and for the World Bank (1993 to 1996)

Member of the consultative committee of the Spanish Food Safety Agency (since 2003).

Author of 397 publications.
